Forty minutes from Lisbon, Ericeira packs seven world-class breaks into just 4 km of coastline: Coxos, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Cave, Reef, Pedra Branca, Crazy Left and São Lourenço. Designated a World Surfing Reserve in 2011 (the only one in continental Europe) and protected by the Save The Waves Coalition. The 7 Reserve Breaks:
- Coxos – Portugal's most perfect right: 200 m hollow wall over reef. Advanced only.
- Ribeira d'Ilhas – classic point break, WSL host since 1985. Works in nearly any swell.
- Cave – short intense tube over shallow reef – mini Portuguese Pipeline.
- Reef – long, fast left in front of the village's most famous bar.
- Pedra Branca – central beachbreak, ideal for intermediates.
- Crazy Left – intense left that holds big swells without losing quality.
- São Lourenço – big wave point 10 min north – picks up giant Atlantic swells.

2026 Lineup
Crowd: 40–100 surfers on a good day at Ribeira d'Ilhas; Coxos always more selective. Localism: respectful – Portuguese are open to polite visitors. English widely spoken. Tip: the village has 30+ surf schools; avoid the main beach summer weekends. Autumn is the best window for fewer crowds.
