Tahiti – Teahupo'o: The Heaviest Tube on the Planet

Teahupo'o (pronounced "Cho-poo") is simply the most dangerous and perfect tube in the world. The name means "wall of skulls" in Tahitian – says it all.

The Discovery

Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia, and Teahupo'o was discovered for Western surfing in the 80s by bodyboarders. It exploded in the 90s when the first tow-in surfers arrived and saw that giant blue barrel breaking on top of a reef at 50 cm depth.

Today the Billabong Pro Teahupo'o is a regular stop on the WSL CT, and Paris 2024 chose exactly this spot for Olympic surfing – which generated major controversy with the judges' tower.

The Wave: Teahupo'o

Type: Heavy left, tubular, mutant. History: First properly surfed in 1986. In 2000, Laird and crew made "Code Red" – historic swell with 15-18 foot tubes. In 2011 the "Code Red II" swell went down in surf history.

Best surfers: Kelly Slater (5 CT victories here), Andy Irons (legendary 2005), Gabriel Medina (epic victories 2014 and 2018), John John Florence, Nathan Hedge, Vetea "Poto" David (local hero), Mateia Hiquily, Kauli Vaast (gold medal at Paris 2024 at home!).

Facts and Accidents

Bruce Irons took one of the worst wipeouts in history in 2000 (classic video). Raimana Van Bastolaer (local) has saved dozens of lives with jet-ski. In 2022, Portuguese Joaquim Chaves nearly died – the reef ate him alive.

Stay Alert – Teahupo'o Edition

Crowd: On big swells the lineup has 20-30 top surfers (many pros and photographers). Respect is everything. Localism: Very strong in the 90s/2000s. Today it's better, but still get the stink eye if you drop in wrong. Give priority to locals.

Equipment and Logistics

Equipment: Step-up 6'4 to 7'0 with plenty of rocker, large fin, reinforced leash. Helmet and vest highly recommended. Getting there: Only accessible by boat (15-20 min from the village). Get connected with local boat drivers.

Accommodation and Gastronomy

Accommodation: Pensão Teahupo'o (simple and beachfront), Airbnb in Teahupo'o or Taravao. Luxury stays in Papeete (1h30 drive). Nutrition/Gastronomy: Poisson cru (raw fish in coconut milk) is mandatory. Buy baguette and cheese at the village shop. Bring water – heat is intense.
