Hossegor, France: Europe's Barrel Capital When the North Atlantic Explodes

By SurfStorms Team • 5 min read

October–November 2025: the North Atlantic is pumping like it hasn't in years. Extratropical storms + La Niña + perfect offshore wind windows = Hossegor in full beast mode. La Gravière, La Nord, Les Culs Nus… French beachbreaks are spitting heavy, fast, mechanical tubes that make even CT pros tremble. Welcome to Europe's Pipeline.

The Swells Dominating Right Now (December 2025)

    • 10–14 ft swell @ 14–16 sec from 290–310° (ideal direction)
    • E-NE offshore wind periods for 3–4 consecutive days (rare!)
    • Water temperature 13–15 °C (4/3 wetsuit + boots + gloves for non-vikings)
    • Perfect post-summer sandbars = A-frames, square tubes and 150m walls to shred

    Spots on fire right now:

    • La Gravièrethe absolute king: shallow, heavy, unpredictable tubes. Running 8–12 ft with Pipeline-sized barrels on an average day.
    • La Nordlong walls, less crowd, infinite carves when the sandbar lines up.
    • Les Culs Nus / Les Estagnotsmore democratic lefts and rights, but still heavy as hell.
    • Capbretonwhen the swell is too north – classic beachbreak with long tubes.

The History That Made Hossegor a Mecca

    • 1960s – Aussies and Californians 'discover' the sandy beaches
    • 1990s – Tom Curren lives here and films the 'Searching' sequences that change power surfing
    • 2010s – CT establishes the Quiksilver/Roxy Pro in September-October
    • 2024 – Jeremy Flores and Joan Duru dominate the local free surf
    • 2025 – historic November swell already being called 'the best since 2016'

    The Lineup Today (December 2025)

Crowd: 60–120 heads at La Gravière on a good day (yes, it's war). Localism: exists, but if you paddle hard, wait your turn, and don't drop in on the 6'6" Frenchman, you'll be fine. Tip: arrive at 6am or 5am in winter – the first 30 minutes are magical and nearly empty.

How to Get There and Survive

    • Fly to Biarritz (30 min) or Bordeaux (2h)
    • Accommodation: Hossegor center or Seignosse (Airbnb €80–150/night in season)
    • Rent a 4×4 car (soft sand on beach roads)
    • Best apps: Surfline + Windguru + La Gravière live cam

    Hossegor Winter 2025 Checklist

    • 6'0–6'6 board with volume (sand shifts daily)
    • 5/4 + 4/3 wetsuit + boots + hood
    • Emergency quiver (banks change overnight)
    • European travel insurance (hospital in Bayonne is top)
    • Breakfast at Lou Vine (croissant + coffee = French fuel)

    Beyond the Wave

    • After-surf at Rock Food or Le Surfing (cold 1664 beer)
    • Skate at the Seignosse bowl
    • Oyster dinner in Capbreton
    • Sunset on the beach watching tomorrow's swell arrive

Hossegor is now in full European charge mode. If you're in Europe or can fly fast, drop everything. These December 2025 swells won't wait for anyone. Bonnes vagues and good luck on Europe's heaviest drop. 🇫🇷🏄‍♂️🔥
